ScanPAC. Built For Life

12 November 2020

There has been a lot of buzz around our ScanPAC’s. The benefits almost sound too good to be true. Essentially, ScanPAC’s are self-contained, dual-stage NH³ engine rooms that are ideal either for converting an existing HFC based facility to NH³ or for servicing a new facility.

If you own a small to medium-sized cold store i.e. 30,000m² and need to expand or replace your operations with a new refrigeration system, a ScanPAC is a great option. Or, if you have a cold store operation around the same size, that needs an upgrade, a ScanPAC offers a long term retrofit solution that makes it a good investment.

Energy-efficient, packaged, sustainable design

A ScanPAC is an innovative, low-charge ammonia refrigeration system that you can take with you wherever you go. Perfect for a small to medium-sized cold store (around 30,000m² or less), or multiple Scanpac’s can also suit larger facilities.

As a small-scale packaged design, ScanPAC’s are relocatable if necessary. But aside from that, these advanced systems are extremely cost-effective and you can expect significantly lower energy and maintenance bills. We have seen some excellent energy performance results with annual energy consumption reduction values of 58% to 71% lower compared with industry-standard HFC based systems.

A lot of the time, businesses go for the cheapest option when it comes to equipment upgrades and replacements, but we encourage our clients to think long term. It’s not the lowest capital cost that’s important, it is taking the view that an upgrade can be a profitable investment. The ScanPAC’s are built to last and if the system is well-maintained i.e. by our Scantec Refrigeration Services team, a ScanPAC system may last several decades. In most cases, payback is within 3 to 6 years.

Powered by natural refrigerants, using low charge ammonia technology, these systems contain 3-5 times less ammonia than conventional plants and they are HFC phase-down ready. This means you won’t have to upgrade any of your equipment down the track due to the phase-out of HFC’s.

Ammonia is steadily advancing into application areas that were previously reserved for synthetic HFC refrigerants. A primary advantage of ammonia is the superior cycle efficiency when used as a refrigerant in a vapour compression refrigeration system.

The greater cycle efficiency is a result of the more favourable thermophysical and transport properties of ammonia. The very low molecular weight of NH³ (17.03 kg/kmol) reduces pressure drops in pipelines, fittings, and valves. NH3 has 5-6 times greater thermal conductivity in the liquid phase compared with HFC’s and this has a very favourable impact on film coefficients in heat exchangers. The very high latent heat of NH3 ensures that a much smaller system mass flow is required than for HFC’s.

At Scantec Refrigeration, we are world-leading designers and suppliers of the most energy-efficient centralised low charge NH³ plants. We have an extensive track record of low temperature, centralised low charge NH3 refrigeration plants globally and with the most statistically significant record of energy performance measurements in such systems.
